Toxic spill in Yau Ma Tei

A highly toxic chemical spilled onto the street in Yau Ma Tei last night, causing a 38-year-old, surnamed Pang, van driver to be sent to hospital for burns and isolation.

Pang suffered burns to his face and hands when one of the lids of the drums of chemicals opened up.

Four health-workers at Kwong Wah hospital, who treated the driver, felt unwell because the leaked chemical, amyl nitrate, used to speed up fuel ignition when inhaled, causes a burning sensation and discomfort in the throat.

The Standard reports firefighters flocked to the scene with protective gear to clean up the spillage.
