Tourist jumps into Shing Mun River after family dispute

A 28-year-old tourist was rescued from Shing Mun River in the early hours of today after she apparently jumped in while drunk and distressed.

At around 1am, pedestrians called police to say that a young woman had jumped into the river facing the Regal Riverside Hotel on Tai Chung Kiu Road, Apple Daily reports. Officers from Sha Tin District and Emergency Unit officers from New Territories South District arrived on the scene shortly.

Three Emergency Unit officers jumped in to the river to rescue the woman, and found her in a shallow muddy area around 20 metres offshore. She was brought safely back onto land but was said to be in an unstable mental state and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

The woman was sent to hospital by ambulance in stable condition. She is a 28-year-old mainland Chinese tourist visiting Hong Kong with her husband and two young sons, aged eight and 10. Police told reporters that she had jumped into the river in an alleged suicide attempt after arguing with her husband.
