Celestial consequences aside, the are earthy repercussions for riling the spirits by damaging and defacing graves — the attention of police.
And detectives from Sham Shui Po are on the case of some sacrilegious suspects.
They’re investigating criminal damage at a Catholic graveyard in Cheung Sha Wan, namely the smashing of 85 urns and tombstones held at the site.
The incident, at St Raphael Catholic Cemetery , was discovered about midday on Sunday by a 62-year-old security guard surnamed Fung, reported Apple Daily.
Dozens of urn niches had been smashed, with holes punched through the sealing slabs where the photos of the deceased are displayed.
At this stage, it’s not clear whether anything was taken and police are searching for a motive.
The incident took place just one week after the hungry ghosts festival, where hungry spirits roam the eart and Hongkongers leave offerings and food for their ancestors.
According to the newspaper, it it quite common for some people to leave valuable items at their ancestor’s niches around this time.
