Hong Kong has recorded four new coronavirus cases for the second day in the row, bringing the city’s total number of cases up to 1,034 (including one probable case).
All four patients — including a two-year-old toddler — had recently returned from the UK.
Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan of the Center for Health Protection said during today’s coronavirus briefing that the new cases involved two males and two females, aged 2 to 68. Cases 1031, 1032, and 1033 were all tested upon arrival at AsiaWorld-Expo within the last 24 hours and taken to hospital immediately after receiving their results.
Case 1034 involves a two-year-old boy who was in the UK from February 3 to April 12 visiting family members with his mother. After arriving in Hong Kong, the pair went into quarantine at home. The mother tested negative for coronavirus soon after returning. On April 20, a stool sample taken from the baby tested positive for coronavirus and he was admitted to the Prince of Wales Hospital.
His parents, who are in quarantine, will be tested in light of the positive result.
Today is the 10th day that the number of new coronavirus cases in Hong Kong has been in the single digits or below. On Monday, the city recorded zero new infections for the first time since March 5.
Health officials have repeatedly stressed that citizens should not let the lower number of new infections lull them into a false sense of security, and urged people to continue practicing social distancing measures and good hygiene.
In a press conference yesterday morning, Chief Executive Carrie Lam echoed the sentiment and said the city would have to continue observing social distancing regulations for at least two more weeks.
