Police arrested three men yesterday over their suspected involvement in a drive-by fireworks attack on protesters that left at least six people injured outside of a police station in Tin Shui Wai last month.

The men — surnamed Yau, Chan, and Kwok, aged 26 to 34 — were accused of illegally discharging fireworks, and fabricating the license plate on the car from which they allegedly shot the fireworks, HK01 reports.

The suspects are currently being detained and investigated by the Yuen Long Division police, according to Ming Pao.

On the night of 30 July, hundreds of protesters congregated in front of the doors of Tin Shui Wai police station to demand the release of two teens who had been arrested while defending a nearby Lennon Wall erected by pro-democracy activists.

Although the teens were released without charge a little before 1:50am, the protesters remained, and at around 2:40am, a car cruised past the station, firing a volley of fireworks into the midst of the crowd.

The private use of fireworks is banned in Hong Kong, though it’s not uncommon to see the ban occasionally flouted.
