Third man died of bird flu in Hong Kong

A 75-year-old man fell sick last week to bird flu and died yesterday. He contracted the H7N9 virus in Shenzhen, the fourth such case in Hong Kong. Other cases were all believed to have been contracted in Guangdong.

The man travelled to Shenzhen from January 20 to 26, and stayed with relatives in a district where a poultry market can be found. He developed mild cold symptoms and fever. By the time he was admitted to Tuen Mun Hospital on January 28, he had serious pneumonia. The man had suffered from high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.

This latest death is prompting a study into whether local eating habits should change from live chickens to chilled ones to lessen the risk of a bird flu outbreak.
