Burglars broke into a jewelry shop on Causeway Bay’s Hennessy Road this morning, making off with HK$10 million (nearly US$1.3 million) worth of gold ornaments.

At around 7 am, police were called to Fly On Jewellery Co. after the intruder alarm of the shop was set off, Headline Daily reports. The thieves are believed to have broken into the store through its back door.

A display windown inside the store was found to be smashed, and was seen covered with a piece of red cloth this morning.

The officers are currently reviewing CCTV footage from neighboring stops in an effort to track down the perpetrators of the burglary.

Nobody has been arrested so far.

Separately, at around 5am, an attempted burglary took place at a restaurant in Pei Ho Street, Sham Shui Po. A safe inside was found to have been moved, and a window was smashed near the back door, however, the owner of the diner did not suffer any lost valuables.

The case has been classified as burglary, and the police have approached the owner of the diner for further investigation.

Chris Tang Ping-keung, the commissioner of the police force, said in a press briefing today that around 59,000 crimes happened in 2019, which is a significant increase by 9.2% in comparison with 2018.
