Hong Kong’s obsession with high test scores and academic achievements has led to young students abusing stimulants to gain an advantage in school. Such drugs has become a hot topic among teens on local forums, many of whom admitted that they use stimulants to pull off all-night revision sessions or gain a mental edge in exams.
These stimulants, usually used to treat ADD, are easily available online, and sold by mainland pharmacies which boasts that “many Hong Kong people buy it and it’s never confiscated by customs.”
In Hong Kong, such stimulants are prohibited without a prescription. These online pharmacies do not require a prescription and cost about HK$800 for 30 pills.
Doctors have pointed out that stimulants like Adderall and Ritalin can cause insomnia, vomiting, headache, paranoia, and even death.
We hope someone will shut down these pharmacies soon, but seeing that they are based in the mainland, there’s probably little chance of that happening any time soon.
