A teen has been sentenced to time at a training center after pleading guilty to raping his younger sister, according to a Sing Tao Daily report.

The brother and sister were said to have sex three times in 2019. The brother was aged 16 at that time and his sister two years younger.

After missing her period, the sister sought medical treatment and found out that she was 22 weeks pregnant.

She later underwent an abortion.

The brother — who is now 19 — earlier pleaded guilty to one count of rape and two counts of incest.

Delivering his sentence on Tuesday, High Court judge Joseph Yau pointed out that it is natural for young people to be curious about sex, but most will not treat their sister as an object of lust.

The judge also denounced the defendant for destroying his sister’s life.

A psychological report of the sister stated that she suffered from severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after the incident and was afraid of the defendant.

Moreover, she lacked confidence in whether her mother could protect her as her father physically abused her mother before they divorced.

However, Yau said a purely custodial sentence might not help the defendant.

The judge said the defendant grew up in a broken family, and could not get proper care and guidance from his parents.

Yau believed this affected his growth and was related to his crime.

Furthermore, the defendant also has borderline intellectual functioning and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), among other issues, and needs to be counseled.

The judge said he did not wish to see the defendant repeat the same mistakes because he did not receive proper counseling.

Taking into account the defendant’s young age, family background and personal problems, Yau sentenced him to time at a training center.

The sister was recommended to receive psychological counseling with her mother.
