Taxi swerves onto busy Causeway Bay pavement, injuring 7 people (VIDEO)

Seven people were injured on Saturday after a Hong Kong taxi swerved onto the busy pavement outside a Causeway Bay department store and ploughed into pedestrians.

The incident occurred at around 11am when the taxi driver, a 71-year-old man surnamed Lau drove his cab onto the pavement in front of SOGO on Hennessy Road, hitting seven people – including a six-year-old boy.

The child and two women, aged 38 and 55, were injured, but did not have to be hospitalised, Apple Daily reports. Of the four injured men and women who were hospitalised, three have been discharged and one is in stable condition.

Lau claimed he had driven onto the pavement to avoid hitting a pedestrian who was crossing the road. He took and passed a breathalyser test, but was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm.

A witness told Apple Daily that a bystander reprimanded the driver for immediately jumping out to check the damage to his cab instead of consoling those he had injured, a sentiment echoed by netizens who commented on footage of the incident on social media.

Lau has since been released on bail and will report back to police at the end of the month. A police investigation is underway.
