Taste Supermarket has the genius idea of selling char siu sushi, sells out instantly

Reader of local magazine 100most, Leo Tang, sent in this photo featuring a puzzling packed lunch at a Taste supermarket.

It looks like sushi but is that… Chinese-style BBQ chicken? And BBQ pork (A.K.A. char siu)?

Yes, someone has combined the two great Asian cuisines – sushi and Cantonese BBQ meat – to make the perfect bite-sized lunch for the busy Hongkonger, and it’s not some lame hipster fusion concoction, either.

Gone are the days where you run out of char siu before you finish your rice, or you’re really craving your BBQ chicken but don’t have the time to sit down with chopsticks and a spoon. The meat-to-rice ratio is already perfect with Taste’s siu mei sushi, and the rice is nicely compacted into a mess-free lump.

Most TV sent an intrepid investigative reporter to check out what this “siu mei sushi” was all about at their local Taste supermarket.

By the time they got there, the store was already sold out but the chef did answer some vital questions. The siu mei sushi is preferably eaten hot, unlike real sushi, but can be eaten cold if the diner so wishes. It is not meant to be eaten with wasabi, and the soy sauce provided is siu mei soy sauce, not regular soy sauce.

Excuse us while we go hunt for some siu mei sushi…
