Tardy son accused of killing scolding mother with scissors sent for psychiatric tests

A Hong Kong court has ordered psychiatric reports on a 39-year-old man who allegedly stabbed his mother to death on Monday with a pair of scissors after she scolded him for coming home late.

Sze Ka-yim appeared at Sha Tin Court yesterday charged with one count of murder, but he was not required to enter a plea.

According to the SCMP, prosecutor Constance Chow told the court how Sze called officers to his home in Green Heron House, Sha Kok Estate, Sha Tin, where they found his mother, Yu Po-sung, 67, with multiple injuries. She was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

It is alleged that Sze admitted under police caution that he killed his mother with a pair of scissors after she scolded him for coming home late.

Chow asked the court to send Sze for psychiatric testing, noting a history of mental illness. She said the 39-year-old began to develop psychiatric problems in 2008 and was at one time hospitalised.

The case has been adjourned until Nov. 3 while the tests are carried out.
