Canadian exporters of geoduck (horse penis) clams are calling on Hong Kong’s health authorities to lift what they see as an unnecessary ban enforced in December.
Just before Christmas last year, Hong Kong’s Centre for Food Safety banned Canada’s imports of the strange looking sea creatures after paralytic shellfish poison (PSP) – which can cause food poisoning symptoms, paralysis and even death – was found in a sample.
But with no-one taking their penises, Canadian exporters are getting desperate, claiming their counterparts in Alaska and Washington State are increasingly filling the void with their meaty specimens instead.
Hong Kong accounts for at least 50 percent of geoduck exports from Canada, with the industry estimated to be worth more than CAD50 million (HKD306 million) in total.
