Two were killed when a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution sports car lost control and crashed into a tree yesterday along Bride’s Pool Road, Tai Po – causing the lives of 28-year-old Joanne Lai and 28-year-old Lo Kin-tang. Read the original post here.
The passenger Lai was a high-speed motor racing enthusiast as was the driver Lo. The two met at an event arranged for motor-racing lovers.
Lai grew up in Vancouver, studying at the University of British Columbia, became an engineer and was working as a Product Planning Specialist for Nissan. Lai was already involved in high-speed motor racing when she was in high school in Canada, entering her first official race in 2005, she was also a race-car model. Next Media reports that Lai had owned four motorcycles at one point.
Lo is a businessman and is the only son to take over the family’s three-generation electrical appliances company, Wing Cheong Electrical Company Ltd.
According to the SCMP, the police are currently investigating whether they were involved in an illegal car race with a Honda Civic Type R which crashed about 200 metres in front of them. The 21-year-old claims to have crashed when he saw Lo and Lai’s car crash and has denied any illegal car-racing activity going on at the time of the crash. Police have also found no telephone records to prove the two knew each other.
However, both cars involved are very popular cars used by young racers and Bride’s Pool Road is a very hot spot for illegal car racing in the city. Many illegal races are also impromptu and not organised.
The skid marks stretching 64 metres and 71 metres on the road according to experts indicates the car was going at speeds of at least 130km/h.
