A Hong Kong man suspected to have stolen a woman’s handbag and wallet plunged to his death yesterday while police officers were searching his home.
The 58-year-old man surnamed Chan was being questioned over a theft committed last week, Apple Daily reports. Three police officers visited Chan’s 17th-floor apartment on Tin Wah Estate in Tin Shui Wai at 5pm yesterday to search his home.
As Chan’s suspected offence was not serious and he was reportedly cooperative, the officers did not handcuff him upon arrival. However, they said the 58-year-old suddenly became agitated and ran to a window.
Two of the officers tried to stop Chan, but could not prevent him from falling out of the window. He was certified dead on the scene. All three police officers who had been questioning the 58-year-old were hospitalised after reporting that they felt unwell.
Chan was a suspect in a theft committed last Thursday at a McDonalds restaurant on Tin Shui Estate. A woman filed a police report saying that her handbag and wallet had been stolen when she was in the fast food outlet.
Police identified Chan as a suspect after reviewing the shop’s CCTV footage.
The case is being investigated by the district crime squad from New Territories North.
