In a dramatic confrontation last night, a male suspect was wounded when a Hong Kong policeman, fearing he’d be knocked down by the assailant’s car, fired two shots during a sting operation in Tuen Mun.
The officer and his colleagues had been staking out the area in Tsing Hoi Court, near Chi Lok Fa Yuen residential estate, to catch those responsible for damaging a local man’s truck, which had been vandalized following a business dispute, according to Apple Daily.
According to a police statement, at about 9.15pm, two men in a private car arrived at the scene where police were waiting.
It quickly became apparent the cops had their suspects. The driver, after getting out of the car, used a brick to smash the truck’s windscreen, acting superintendent Yan Fong-wai, of Tuen Mun district police, told reporters at a press briefing.
As they moved in for the arrest, the situation escalated. According to the police, the man resisted and tussled with officers before getting back into the car and attempting to flee.
“When officers attempted to intercept the private car, the man tried to knock down a police officer with the car,” according to the statement.
“The police officer gave verbal warnings to two men inside the car but in vain, and subsequently fired two shots at the men in the car.”
The pair then fled in the car along Castle Peak Road towards Sam Shing Estate direction, while the officer suffered injuries to hands and leg and was sent to Tuen Mun Hospital.
About 10pm, police found the suspects’ car dumped in Shan Ha Tsuen, Yuen Long. The 24-year-old suspect, suffering a leg injury, later turned up at Pok Oi hospital seeking treatment.
With police notified, the man was arrested and taken to Tuen Mun Hospital for medical treatment.
He has been detained on suspicion of criminal damage, furious driving and assaulting police officers.
His accomplice remains on the run. The SCMP reported police are investigating whether the suspects have triad connections.
