As Hongkongers, we’re more than used to seeing cockroaches running around our feet in back alleys, scuttling in the stairwells of our buildings, and even languishing in the odd Maxim’s meal.
It still comes as an unpalatable surprise, however, when we’re casually shopping for dumplings in our local supermarket, only to come face to face with an insect doing the same.
Thanks to cockroach crusading Coconaut Marius Vasiliu who sent us this photo of a cringey crawly apparently making himself at home in a display cabinet at the Taste Supermarket in the Hopewell Centre, Wan Chai.
And there were we thinking Taste was fancy.
Note, however, that the cockroach in question is sat on a mirror, so it’s actually only half as bad as it looks.
UPDATE: ParknShop replied to us with the following comment:
“We are very concerned about this incident. Hygiene is our top priority. We have checked the chiller that stocks the dumpling immediately and do not find any cockroach. We also have not received any related complaints.
“This store employs a professional pest control contractor that operates throughout the store and includes routine anti cockroach treatments. Our Quality Assurance department also conducts regular surveillance to ensure hygiene condition. It is following up this incident with our pest control contractor to further strengthen the pest control in the store.”
