After 17 years in action, local newspaper The Sun will no longer be published, according to HKFP.
Its owners, Oriental Press Group Limited, announced the news on Tuesday in a notice posted via the Stock Exchange, saying the decision was in response to “a deteriorating business environment”. The paper will cease publishing tomorrow, and its corresponding website is also scheduled to be closed down at the same time.
Staff and resources are expected to be reallocated internally to the group’s active businesses.
The tabloid newspaper, renowned for being cheap (not unlike the UK paper with which it shares its name) and pro-Beijing, has consistently been one of the best-selling newspapers in Hong Kong since its launch in 1999.
The board of directors hasn’t ruled out the possibility of resuming publication in the future should the environment become better suited.
According to sources, the end of The Sun should have no impact on its parent group, shareholders or other newspapers belonging to the group, including Oriental Daily. The world will not be any darker for Oriental Press Group, it seems.
