Subdivided flat in Yau Ma Tei catches fire, injures six

A couple of months ago a gas canister exploded and killed one in a subdivided flat (see here), and in Yau Ma Tei yesterday a similar incident injured six, with one in critical condition.

The fire, suspected to be caused by a short-circuit in the stove, occured at Man Yuen building on Man Wai Street. The building is split into eight flats – five of which are subdivided – on on the first floor. The fire broke out in a 560 sq ft flat on the first floor that was divided into nine units. Firefighters rescued 33 people from the fire and another 55 escaped themselves.

The incident is yet another wake up call for the need to review the safety of and need for subdivided be licensed.
