A 15-year-old girl was killed this morning after she was hit by a minibus on her way to an exam.

The incident took place at around 8am today, when the minibus was driving northbound on Sheung Fung Street in Wong Tai Sin. As the bus reached the junction of Sheung Fung Street and Lung Fung Street, it hit the teen, who was crossing the road, Ming Pao reports.

The girl, surnamed Chiu, was trapped under the minibus and suffered serious injuries. Passersby called emergency services while a doctor and nurse from a nearby hospital came to administer first aid to Chiu before firefighters arrived to free her. The 15-year-old was rushed to Caritas Medical Centre by ambulance, where she was declared dead at 10:17am.

Chiu was a Form 4 student at St. Bonaventure College on 47 Sheung Fung Street. At the time of the accident, she was on her way to school to take an exam. The minibus driver, a 61-year-old man surnamed Wong, passed a breathalyser test on the scene. He has since been arrested for dangerous driving causing death and is being detained by police for investigation.

Police told reporters that they have not ruled out the possibility that Wong ran a red light, or that Chiu was jaywalking. A police investigation is underway.
