Hongkongers can expect frequent showers and strong winds today as the first typhoon of the year approaches southern China.

The Hong Kong Observatory today announced a “No. 3” level strong wind signal, warning the public to stay away from the shoreline and give water sports a miss for the day.

Typhoon Merbok is currently situated about 230 kilometers south-southeast of Hong Kong and moving north by northwest toward Guangdong, where it is expected to make landfall by about midnight.

A low pressure system over the South China coast means more heavy showers and thunderstorms can be expected later in the week as well. Local temperatures will hover around 30 degrees today, with clouds and occasional showers growing heavier by tonight.

The Education Bureau has announced that kindergarten classes and special schools for disabled children will be closed for the day.
