Street Food: Netizen catches snack stall worker prepping food on the floor, manager offers him HKD15 to ‘go away’

A snack stall in Mong Kok is under fire after footage of a worker preparing food on the floor went viral on Hong Kong social media.

At around 2am on Wednesday, a man surnamed Chung went to his regular snack shop near Sin Tat Plaza to buy some food when he saw a worker prepping skewers with chicken wings placed on the wet and dirty floor, Apple Daily reports.

“She’d already been doing it for a few minutes,” Chung said. To be fair, the skewers would be just as contaminated even if the chicken had only been on the floor for a short amount of time. (Yeah five-second-rule people, we’re looking at you.)

Horrified, Chung filmed the woman skewering the dirty food and throwing it directly on the grill, and complained to the shop owner. Instead of being surprised or apologising, the shop owner apparently offered Chung HKD15 “to go away”.

“I told him he could be harming his customers but he replied that it ‘wasn’t a problem’,” Chung told Apple Daily.

After he reported the incident to the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, Chung shared the video on Facebook to warn his fellow netizens. He later remarked that he had experienced a bout of gastroenteritis over the summer, and speculated that it could have been caused by the snacks he used to get from the stall.
