A 33-year-old assistant manager of Standard Chartered bank was sentenced to five years in jail for raping a colleague’s girlfriend instead of sending her home after she got drunk in Lan Kwai Fong.
According to the Apple Daily, the defendant, Lam, was supposed to take the intoxicated 23-year-old woman home. However, after Lam got into a cab with her, he started molesting her, and instead of taking her home, took her to a love hotel where he raped her and took nude photos of her.
After raping her, Lam sent the woman many text messages to apologise, and even kneeled on the floor and begged for a chance to explain himself. In court, he explained he apologised not because he thought what he did was wrong but because of his job at the bank, he’s wired to apologise whenever a client complaints even if he did nothing wrong. Lam also said the 23-year-old tried to kiss him on the taxi and so he thought she was trying to hint at a one-night-stand.
Even though the judge sympathised with Lam and felt that on this occasion he acted on impulses and wasn’t able to control his sexual tendencies, Lam must be responsible for his actions and sentenced him to five years in jail.
