The government may soon implement a pay-as-you-throw fee system to ease the burden on landfills, with the public warming to the idea. According to a four-month consultation carried out by the Council for Sustainable Development, most respondents favour a monthly levy of less than HK$30 for a typical family.
However, environmental group Greeners Action believe that HK$30 is too low, and will provide no incentive for families to reduce their waste. However, if it is too high, people will not be able to afford it either.
The government is currently working with flat owners’ corporations and management companies to put a pilot scheme in place, so that possible difficulties can be caught before implementing it city-wide.
