Son turns father in to the police for stealing and gambling away HKD9,000 of lai see money

A 63-year-old man was arrested on Monday evening after his son turned him into the police. While you would be forgiven for thinking this was a case of childhood hijinks, apparently the man’s son is actually 25 years old.

Both men (obviously) share the same surname – Cheung – but for the purpose of clarity (and hilarity), we will henceforth refer to the 63-year-old as Cheung the Elder, and his son Cheung the Younger.

Cheung the Younger managed to scrape together a pretty respectable HKD9,000 in savings and red packets this Lunar New Year, Ming Pao reports.

At around 11pm on Monday evening, the 25-year-old returned to his family home in Tuen Mun’s Kin Sang village and reportedly found his backpack was emptied of its precious cash cargo.

Upon his son’s discovery, Cheung the Elder allegedly fessed up to nicking and subsequently gambling it all away.

It appears Cheung the Younger (and now Poorer) doesn’t let things go very lai s-easily, as he then filed a police report and had his father arrested.

Police have classified the incident as a case of theft, while Cheung the Elder has probably learned a lesson about his son’s views on blood being thicker than water.
