A 61-year-old man and his 91-year-old mother both died after he tried to save her from a “suspicious” fire in their Mong Kok residence.
Pharmacy worker Yeung Wai-ming went straight to his mother’s flat in the same building when he and his wife were evacuated from the Cosmopolitan Centre, 760 Nathan Road, on Tuesday night.
Yeung’s body was found on top of his mother’s, just three metres from the door.
“It is possible he found her there and tried to carry her in his arms but he inhaled smoke, passed out and fell onto her,” a police source told the SCMP.
Police have also said that there are suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident, but refused to go into further details.
The fire broke out in a 12th floor unit at around 11.35pm on Tuesday night. Eleven fire engines and five ambulances attended, and around 80 residents were evacuated.
The blaze was quelled shortly after midnight.
Yeung is survived by his wife and a teenage daughter.
