Who would have thought bathrooms at the airport were way, like way, dirtier than public bathrooms at Kowloon Park, Mong Kok East Station and even Tai Po market! The toilets at the airport look so clean!
Unfortunately, it seems how a place looks isn’t a good indication of its cleanliness levels. The Sun recently found that toilet paper in eight public toilets greatly exceeded healthy bacteria level limits – bacteria levels found at the airport were the highest, exceeding the health limit 102 times.
Kowloon Park’s bathroom bacteria levels were 72.3 times over the limit, Central library 62.3, Tai Po market 59, Mong Kok East Station 57.3, Science Museum 14.5, Kwong Wah Hospital 10.7, and in a Wan Chai public toilet 7 times the limit.
It’s not the first time Hong Kong airport bathrooms have been found to be unclean – a recent investigation found airport toilets’ hand soaps to exceed the limit 3400 times.
Travellers however, feel the toilets look clean and aren’t too worried. They will start fretting if they knew that high levels of bacteria in the toilets, especially contaminated toilet paper may lead to health problems, such as bladder inflammation and in more serious cases internal organ failure leading to death.
An airport spokesman expresses that the airport is aware of the importance of hygiene and is working on follow-up actions.
