S’long Stress City: Mindfulness course coming to Hong Kong

Even before appearing on the cover of TIME magazine earlier this year, the concept of mindfulness was hogging its fair share of column inches. Touted by everyone from CEOs to scientists as a means for establishing focus, emotional control and clarity, this new buzzword, based on ancient Buddhist meditation teachings, is coming to Hong Kong.

Centred on training the brain through meditation to ‘feel’ rather than ‘think’, mindfulness has been found to help with depression, anxiety and addiction, with neuroscientific studies showing it actually changes the structure of areas in the brain responsible for attention, emotions and empathy.

For the second time this year, Stuart Lennon will be hosting his six- week Mindful Focus course, teaching both the philosophy and practicalities of the technique.

“People in Hong Kong are often overwhelmed with high pressure work environments, dense living conditions, and constant demands on their time and attention. This can leave us feeling tense, prone to agitation and conflict, and generally unhappy with how our lives are going. Mindfulness builds our capacity to be present with how things are, developing our focus, emotional resilience and steadiness,” Stuart explains.

The course will run across six Mondays for seven weeks from Sept. 15 – Oct. 27 (no session on Sept. 29) at The Henley Group (1/F Henley Building, 5 Queen’s Road Central). The entire package, which includes downloadable guided meditations and resources, is available for HKD2,500 until Aug. 29, or HKD3,000 thereafter.
