Slippery when wet: Soppiest January recorded for 132 years

Meteorologically, 2016’s been off to a strange, record-breaking start. After the first January amber rainstorm warning ever recorded was issued, Hong Kong was hit with a “polar vortex” that brought the coldest day for 59 years

Now, the Hong Kong Observatory is saying that this January has been the wettest year recorded for 132 years, and the month’s not even over yet.

A total of 233.8mm of rainfall has been recorded so far this month, breaking the previous record of 214.3mm recorded in 1887.

The unusually soppy circumstances have been partially blamed on El Niño, the weather pattern which the Observatory said has brought more precipitation to Hong Kong’s usually dry winters.

The HKO claimed that while it is expected to rain for the remainder of the month, Hongkongers could see a few sunny patches throughout Saturday.
