One dead after Siu Sai Wan public housing estate fire

A woman has died after a fire broke out at Siu Sai Wan Estate in Chai Wan today. The fire was reported at 12.20am and is thought to have originated from a 28th floor apartment at Sui Lok House. 

Oriental Daily reports that firefighters arrived on the scene five minutes after receiving the call, and approximately 500 residents were evacuated from their homes. 

A 46-year-old woman, surnamed Li, was rescued from her bathroom in a comatose state about 30 minutes after the fire was reported. She was rushed to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital and declared dead at 1.41am. 

Another resident felt sick due to smoke inhalation and was cared for by medics on the scene, but did not require hospitalisation. 

The firefighters successfully extinguished the fire at 1.44am. The Fire Services Department has established a task force to investigate the cause of the blaze.
