A woman who trapped her cat in a spinning washing machine a year ago was sentenced to 80 hours of community service on Monday.

According to local media reports, insurance agent Yuki Wong was arrested in 2021 and convicted of animal cruelty earlier this month.

Wong, who is the twin sister of Miss Hong Kong 2019 Carmaney Wong, uploaded a video on social media of her putting her cat in the washing machine, then letting it run for 14 seconds.

Warning: the following footage may cause distress.

The video went viral, with many internet users slamming her for animal cruelty.

The reports added that Wong was sentenced to 80 hours of community service and asked to pay the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals around HK$27,000 (approximately US$3,500) for taking care of and treating the cat.

The magistrate noted that she was given the community service order because she has a good family background and education, no criminal record, was unlikely to repeat the offense and that the cat was not severely injured.
