In a city where most businesses are seemingly blinded by profit and self-interest, famous Sichuanese eatery Wing Lai Yuen announced earlier this week that it will start providing menu-reading services for visually impaired patrons, making them the first restaurant in the city to do so, reports Oriental Daily.
So how will it work? The restaurant management paired up with Multimedia Print Reader Hong Kong Ltd. (MPRHK), a company that sells high-tech learning tools, and developed a pen that reads out the menu by scanning the words on the page. The pen is even multilingual – it can read out in Cantonese, Mandarin and English.
According to the Hong Kong Federation for the Blind, each pen costs only HKD10 to make.
Now the restaurant has more than just their delicious dan dan mian to be proud of! We hope that other eateries will soon follow suit.
