A video showing a young child in Hong Kong tossing what appears to be a live shrimp on the ground and stomping on it is drawing concern and condemnation among netizens.

The video, posted on a public Facebook group on Saturday, shows the child, who appears to be kindergarten aged, grabbing the shrimp from a tub of water in a wet market stall and throwing it to the ground.

He then stomps on it twice before picking it up and tossing it back into the tub.

According to the poster, the incident took place in Tin Shui Wai Market.

“The shrimp died in an awful manner,” said the poster.

“Why are children these days so violent and cruel?”

One netizen called out the child for being so naughty, while some others asked which school he is from.

Some internet users said his parents are responsible for not bringing him up properly.

Another questioned if he is facing a lot of pressure in school.

One internet user pointed out how children’s overexposure to electronic devices these days results in them thinking that living things are inanimate objects.

“From his understanding, shrimps are non-living things, which are different from him, so he stomps on a shrimp a few times to observe the changes as though he is doing an experiment,” the netizen said.
