Erwiana Sulistyaningsih (left) with a friend before working in Hong Kong
The case of Erwiana Sulistyaningsih who suffered horrifying abuse allegedly at the hands of her employer has garnered international attention, with coverage in Time Magazine, Wall Street Journal, New York Times and other large news organisations, bringing shame to Hong Kong. Time magazine even called Indonesian maids “modern-day slaves” in their headline, implying that Hong Kong employers are slave drivers.
Further heart-wrenching details about Erwiana’s abuse has been bought to light, whose employers gave her no wages or weekends off for eight months and death threats.
She was starved and frequently beaten with a broom or mop, and most of her teeth was broken by her employer with a vacuum cleaner. Her feet has suffered the worst injuries, which was scalded so repeatedly that the wounds have festered and blackened with rot.
Erwiana suffers from frequent headaches from being hit in the head repeatedly. She was so traumatised that she weeps anytime someone mentions Hong Kong, which makes testifying against her employers difficult. So far, no arrests has been made yet.
