Is our city becoming increasingly unsafe for young women?
The Social Welfare Department released statistics which showed that for the first nine months of this year, there was a 70% increase in sexual violence cases compared to the previous year.
This year, 405 cases were reported, the most in the last four years. This means that three sexual violence cases happen every two days.
Reports of molestation also doubled, with cases happening on average everyday. More devastatingly, there were also over 200 cases of child abuse. According to Social Welfare, many of the offenders are known to or close friends of the victims, and most sexual assault cases happen to young women in their 20s.
