Bevan Chuang Ka-yan (32) exposed her two-year affair with Auckland Mayor Len Brown (57) days after the mayor was re-elected.
Chuang was born and raised in Hong Kong, she studied at Chinese International School until 1996 before emigrating to New Zealand where she met Brown at a council function when she was on the Ethic Peoples Advisory Panel in May 2011.
Chuang claims that Brown texted and called her constantly until they proceeded to closed door meetings. In June, Brown kissed Chuang and their sexual relationship began shortly after her birthday in August 2011. Reports also claim that Brown helped Chuang get a job with his recommendation.
Chuang has been targeted for being a gold digger after speaking on a radio show about being a mistress. “I don’t need to be someone’s toy. In Asian countries, you have a lot of married men who go and find a mistress but they go and spend heaps of money on them. Kiwi men don’t do that. I’m not getting any financial gain out of this either.”
“It is one of those things where my mum said to me … ‘If you want to be someone’s mistress, there has to be something out of it – either love or money or fame, some sort of status or travel.’
“But if I don’t get any of that, it’s not one that I want to consider,” she added.
Some are speculating that Chuang is speaking up about the affair for political reasons. Chuang was reported to support Brown’s rival John Palino during his recent election campaign. The story of her relationship with Brown was broken by Cameron Slater, son of Palino’s campaign manager.
Here’s what Chuang said on her facebook page:
“Thank you to my family and friends who have been so supportive of me over the last few days. I don’t intend to make any more public statements in the near future to anybody, as I deeply regret what has happened recently. I have been foolish, but I feel used, abused and manipulated by people I thought were friends who have been taking snippets of what I have said to advance their own political agendas and muck-raking campaigns. And would Cam Slater and Palino’s team PLEASE stop texting and calling me. This is harassment!”
The journalist, Stephen Cook, who was responsible for breaking the story is said to be in negotiations with Chuang to star in X-rated websites and soft porn movies re-enacting her affair with Brown.
