A construction worker, who injured eight people in acid attacks on two separate restaurants last year, pleaded guilty to eight counts of throwing corrosive fluid with intent to do grievous bodily harm on Tuesday.
The court heard that Lam Yan-lun, 47, splashed drain cleaner around a Cafe de Coral restaurant at Wah Hing Industrial Mansions in San Po Kong, and another in the Tsz Wan Shan Shopping Centre on Nov. 25 2014, reports the SCMP.
A three-year-old boy was among the eight people who received facial burns from the assault.
Lam admitted to police that he acted out of frustration, after being rejected for sex by a masseuse. He also said that he had targeted Café de Coral stores as his teeth had fallen out after eating there before.
The court was told that four separate psychiatrists diagnosed Lam as suffering from a psychiatric illness, but Lam was in denial of his condition. He claimed to be normal – like every other sane being who chucks acid on complete strangers.
Oddly enough, Deputy Judge Gareth told Lam that he was “seriously ill” and requires medical treatment.
Lam injured three staff members and a mother and son in the restaurant in San Po Kong, and a further three employees in the outlet in Tsz Wan Shan.
Police arrested Lam on the day of the attack. He said he splashed staff at the two outlets “often served food like shit”. Fair comment.
All eight victims received burns to the face, but have thankfully recovered. The young boy required specialist eye treatment at an eye hospital, after being left with corneal abrasions. He has not suffered any permanent disability though.
