Sensors introduced to catch polluting vehicles

The Environmental Protection Department announced that 12 sensors at a cost of HK$12 million have been purchased to crackdown polluting vehicles in the city.

The scheme will start Sept. 1 when roadside remote sensing equipment will check emission levels of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and other pollutants from petrol and LPG vehicles. The location of the sensors will be changed daily and if the scheme is successful more sensors will be bought and placed around Hong Kong.

If vehicles are over the limits, vehicle owners will have to get them fixed and go for another emission test at To Kwa Wan or Kowloon Bay within 12 days, as well as pay a test cost of HK$310. Drivers failing to do so may have their license revoked, reports The Standard.

Until August the two centers will provide the emission tests for free.
