Second Hong Kong hiker dies in a week as mother swept into the sea in Sai Kung

For the second time in a week, a Hong Kong hiker has died after getting into difficulties in the great outdoors.

Yesterday, 45-year-old Lau Yin was swept into the sea near Tai Long Wan in Sai Kung Country Park while trying to climb rocks along the shoreline.

A sudden wave pulled her into the swell as she was climbing with her back to the water.

According to the SCMP, her son described her as an experienced hiker.

Three companions who were with Lau at the time tried to call the police but were hindered by bad reception in the area.

A nearby boat was also unable to offer assistance because of the rough sea, but the crew managed to contact the police.

Eventually marine police arrived on the scene and pulled Lau from the water. They were, however, unable to revive her and she was pronounced dead after being airlifted to hospital.

Lau’s tragic death is the second similar incident in a week.

On Sunday Jan. 18, 60-year-old retiree Cheung Wing-on fell 60 metres to his death when trying to rescue yet another hiker from steep cliffs on Lantau Island.
