Seasonal Shiftiness: Mainlanders arrested for illegally trading moon cakes in Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s Immigration Department have revealed that several mainlanders were arrested this week for parallel trading of a variety of goods, including moon cakes, a traditional delicacy consumed during the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival (Sept. 8).

After we reported last week that the team arrested 32 illegal workers in just three days, much to the applause of our fans, the department announced yesterday that 10 mainlanders have been snagged for illegal trading.

Two men and eight women between the ages of 39 and 67 were arrested for breaching the conditions of their stay by trading in cosmetics, alcohol, milk power and, very topically, moon cakes along Kwu Tung Roa in Lok Ma Cha.

The department says a total of 1,344 mainlanders and 14 Hong Kongers have been arrested for similar offences since September 2012. By similar we mean parallel trading, but not necessarily in moon cakes.
