SCMP’s 48 HOURS weekend magazine is the latest Hong Kong print publication to find itself on the chopping block.
According to Marketing Interactive, a leaked memo has revealed that the last issue of the magazine will be distributed on Aug. 20, after which the content will be dispersed to other parts of the paper and online.
“This is in sync with our current plans to accelerate the integration of print and digital resources towards a more efficient multi-media platform,” the memo said.
Here’s a tip, guys: lose the paywall!
The magazine has been handed out free with the newspaper every Thursday since 2013. Thankfully, no-one is expected to lose their jobs.
“We thank the entire 48 HOURS editorial team for their passion, dedication and creativity, and look forward to their continued as we strengthen our lifestyle content in the SCMP.” Xiangwei Wang, editor-in-chief of the SCMP, apparently said in the memo.
Let’s hope this means they’ll focus all their strengths on HK Magazine, which was always far superior to 48 HOURS anyway.
