We’ve all been there. You’re 9 years old, you’re on the school bus, and you’re almost at your stop.

The world is your oyster! A full afternoon of childhood wonders unfurls before you! In your utter glee, unable to contain yourself, you giddily bounce up and down… and your backpack strap gets caught on the emergency door handle and you go spilling into the street in a discombobulated heap when the bus makes a sharp turn.

No? That never happened to you guys?

Well, it’s exactly what happened to a schoolkid in Tai Koo Shing last week, as seen in a now-viral video making the rounds. Luckily, the boy didn’t suffer any injuries beyond a couple minor scratches, according to Apple Daily.

According to police, the private school bus was making a turn from Tai Koo Shing Road onto King’s Road when the emergency door suddenly swung open, causing the little boy to be flung clear out of the vehicle.

Video taken by the dashcam of a car following the bus shows the kid falling out of the emergency door, and almost immediately popping up, collecting himself, and scampering off after the now-stopped bus just a ways up the road as what appears to be a forgotten thermos slowly rolls towards the gutter.

The close call, and the boy’s quick reaction, had netizens chuckling over his “ninja training,” with some sticks in the mud dourly commenting on how important it was for the bus’ minder to check the emergency door carefully.

However, according to the boy’s school principal, surnamed Lai, it wasn’t really the door’s fault.

“The kid was not being mischievous,” he said. “It was merely an accident.”

Police looked into the matter, and found that the bus was not overloaded, the door was in good working order, and the driver hadn’t been drinking.

According to the schoolkids’ minder: “The kid, who had his backpack on, was sat near the emergency door. When it was nearly time for him to get off the bus, he kept jumping and the backpack strap was caught on the emergency door handle so the door opened [due to] him jumping up and down.”

Principal Lai noted that while many buses have a cover over the emergency door handle, the one in question was an older model, and did not.
