Say hello to the Extendable Octopus: All the fun of an Octopus card, now with added reach

Have you ever wondered “what if a selfie stick and an Octopus card had a baby?”

Well, if you have, we’ve got some news for you — they’re about to.

Get ready to wave hello to the Extendable Octopus, the latest technological advance brought to you by modern science.

Available starting Nov. 2, you can be the owner of a device critics (we) are calling the “best extendable rod this year” and “super handy, five stars”.

The Extendable Octopus — or extendo-pus, as we’re hoping it will become known — is “thoughtfully designed” to cater to drivers’ needs, says the Octopus company on its website.

What needs? Well, glad you asked.

“An Adult Octopus is installed in the ‘palm’ of the extendable rod, which makes it easier for drivers to tap the Octopus for payment at car parks or tunnel tolls,” the website informs.

“Users can also take out the Octopus from the ‘palm’ for use separately, allowing drivers to enjoy the true pleasure brought about by Octopus payment.”

There you have it.

It’s all about making that true pleasure brought by your Octopus payments just that little bit easier to attain.

If you’re like us, it’s an end to the indignity of holding up traffic while stretching your little T-Rex arms out of the car window to reach the Octopus scanner after misjudging the approach.

We kid, we don’t have a car and only one of our arms is bizarrely short, not both.

Anyways, the Extendable Octopus can be used anywhere where Octopus cards are accepted, giving you a handy advantage on fellow commuters if you’re racing for the same entry gate at the MTR.

It comes in two strangely specific lengths — 22.8cm and 59.2cm — and can be bought from Circle K stores and the Octopus Online Shop.

They also save the last 40 transaction records, which can be checked by using the Octopus App or Octopus PC Reader. Nice.
