Sai Kung commuters had to be rescued by the emergency services today after intense rain saw cars and buses submerged deep into flood water.

Commuters were frantically Facebooking their photos while the bus they was on filled up with water to the level of the seats.

From what we can work out, the bus, which was travelling along Tai Mong Tsai Road at around 10am this morning when it started filling up with water, became stuck along with other cars.

One photograph we received (see header) even showed a car almost fully submerged in the flood waters.
John Trotter took to Facebook to give his account of events:
“It was a little scary for a while. Water getting higher on the bus and no sign of emergency services. We ended up clearing the drains by hand until the water subsided. Then the police came, of course. There was a classic moment when some big burly guy ran down the road towards us, look a photo and then ran back to his car. We thought he was coming to help. Haha. Classic Sai Kung morning.”

Others went online to complain about the lack of warning.
“Shame on the Hong Kong Observatory for not issuing a black rainstorm warning. Put lives at risk in Sai Kung,” wrote Cathryn Beacher.

Hong Kong Observatory has not yet replied to our request for a comment.
