Ruby and diamond necklace sets record with HKD100 million sale at Hong Kong auction

It seems it wasn’t just that Hermès handbag that broke a record at a Christie’s auction in Hong Kong this week.

While the pink crocodile-skin, diamond encrusted Birkin fetched a cool HKD1.72 million on Monday, a ruby and diamond necklace fetched a practically Baltic HKD100 million on Tuesday.

The necklace, which features un-enhanced rubies from Myanmar – the rarest source in the world – set a record for the most expensive piece of jewellery ever sold at auction in Asia after 10 minutes of tense phone bidding.

Other items in the sale also went for 10-15 times their estimate.
