Rice brands to avoid in Hong Kong

As we reported yesterday, three rice brands were found by the Consumer Council to contain high levels of the metal cadmium.

Long-term intake of cadmium, found in the rice brands can affect kidney and bladder function. Under Hong Kong’s Food Adulteration (Metallic Contamination) Regulations, cadmium content of rice should not exceed 0.1 milligram per kilogram. The following three brands have been found to exceed the legal limit:

Jin Feng Nian’s Chang Xiang Yu Rice, imported from Nanchang city, Jiangxi province, contains 0.223mg of cadmium in a kg of rice.

Golden Way from Guangdong’s Heyuan city, contains 0.149mg per kg of rice

Golden Wave’s Tsang Shing Siu Mei Rice from Guangdon’s Heyuan city contains 0.143mg per kg of rice

ParknShop has already taken the three brands off the shelves and Wellcome supermarket does not sell them.
