UPDATE: Rescuers today found the body of a paraglider who went missing from Lantau Island on Sunday after being blown off course by strong winds.

The discovery was made by personnel from the Civil Aid Service on the fifth day of the search for 44-year-old Patrick Chung.

A police spokeswoman said Chung was certified dead at 2.30pm this afternoon and his body had been taken to the Eastern Hospital.

A statement by the Hong Kong Paragliding Association (HKPA) said Chung had “been found today around noon in the Lantau Sunset park area.”

The area appears to be near the location where Chung and a group of several paragliders took off at about 2pm on Sunday, before encountering strong winds from an abrupt squall. Chung was reported missing after failing to return that evening.

The HKPA said their thoughts were with the pilot’s family at “this difficult time.”

More than 200 personnel from the police, fire services, Civil Aid Service and Government Flying Service have been searching the area throughout the week. Volunteers from paragliding groups also joined emergency service teams searching for their friend.

In their statement, HKPA thanked personnel involved in the search.
