Regina Ip: HKFS should be part of Hong Kong’s CE nominating committee

Regina Ip, chairwoman of the pro-Beijing New People’s Party, has recommended that the Hong Kong Federation of Students (HKFS) be part of the nominating committee to select candidates for the 2017 chief executive elections.

She believes that the committee could cut down on the current 60 (!) seats held by the Agricultural and Fisheries sector, and replace them with young people and women who represent a broader scope of opinions.

“HKFS has a long history and is widely recognised, and their officers have been elected,” Ip said, according to EJ Insight . She added that Scholarism, the student group headed by democracy darling Joshua Wong, “are mostly secondary school students who are below 18 and have not come through an election.”

Fancy rejecting those who haven’t even been elected!

Ip encouraged the government to start a second round of discussions on political reform, with emphasis on the screening procedures and voting systems of the nominating committee.

NPP deputy chairman Tien Puk-sun said he supports Ip’s proposal, adding insightfully that those involved in the Umbrella Movement want a voice in Hong Kong’s electoral process.

Yep, that or a different process altogether where everyone gets a voice.
