Lai see packets kill 16,000 trees a year

Do you have more red envelopes than you can use? We all do. Although new red envelopes smell nice and feel crisp, we are destroying 16,300 trees each year by exchanging 320 million red envelopes among family and friends during the Lunar New Year holidays, according to green group Greeners Action.

In a survey done by the group, 75 percent of people do not use up all the envelopes they have, and more than one-quarter throw the excess in the garbage. With shops and corporations printing red envelopes excessively as a marketing tool, usage of these red envelopes have increased from 180 million in 2012 to 320 million last year, but most of it goes to waste.

Rather than getting new envelopes, consider reusing red envelopes. Greeners Action will be distributing used envelopes in Tsuen Wan, Mong Kok, and Tuen Mun over the next three weekends.
