Record low population at Hong Kong’s prisons

In 2013, Hong Kong’s prison population reached a record low in 20-years, with just over 9,000 inmates at the end of 2013.

Sin Yat-kin, Correctional Services Commissioner, claimed that this is a 2.8 percent population drop from 2012.

Unfortunately, inmates in jail for serious crimes remain in high numbers, with 112 high-risk prisoners in 2013. Therefore, tighter security measures in prisons will be enforced to deal with the high number of high-risk prisoners despite a smaller population of inmates.
